Viviscal is a marine-collagen-based hair supplement that's been around for decades, and like most supplements its honest verdict is "modest, gradual support for some people — not a treatment for genetic balding." There's company-funded evidence of reduced shedding and improved density over a few months, but it's an ongoing cost for an effect smaller than minoxidil or finasteride.
What's in it
The centerpiece is AminoMar, a proprietary marine complex derived from fish, paired with biotin, vitamin C from acerola, zinc, and horsetail extract for silica. The idea is to supply the building blocks for hair and support the follicle through the growth phase — a nourishment angle rather than a hormonal one.
What the evidence shows
Several studies report reduced shedding and increased hair numbers over 3–6 months, most of them in women with self-perceived thinning — and most of them funded by the manufacturer. Independent, long-term trials are limited. It's plausible as nutritional support, but it does nothing to address DHT, so it won't stop androgenetic hair loss on its own.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Long track record and a large user base
- Generally well tolerated, simple twice-daily dosing
- May reduce shedding within a few months
- Dedicated Viviscal Man formula available
Cons
- Fish-derived — unsuitable for fish allergies and not vegan
- Evidence is largely sponsor-funded and skews toward women
- Ongoing monthly cost for a modest effect
- Does nothing for DHT, so it won't halt genetic balding
The verdict
Viviscal is a reasonable adjunct for people with diffuse shedding or nutritional gaps, or alongside proven treatments — not a substitute for them. If you're choosing between supplements, Nutrafol takes a more multi-pathway approach, while Viviscal is the longer-established, simpler marine-complex option. Either way, set expectations at "modest support over several months" and commit to at least 90 days before judging.
