How to Use Minoxidil Correctly (and the Mistakes That Waste It)

Minoxidil only works if you apply it right. Here's the step-by-step — dose, dry scalp, foam vs liquid, timing — and the common mistakes that sabotage results.

Minoxidil only works if you use it correctly and consistently: apply 1 mL of the 5% solution (or half a capful of foam) to a dry scalp twice a day, focus on the thinning areas, and let it dry fully before touching your hair or pillow. The two biggest mistakes are applying it to wet hair and quitting during the early shed.

Step by step

  • Start with a dry scalp — towel-dry after washing and let it finish drying first
  • Liquid: dispense 1 mL with the dropper onto the thinning areas. Foam: half a capful, melted on cool, dry fingers
  • Apply twice daily, roughly 12 hours apart (once daily is the fallback if twice isn't realistic)
  • Spread with fingertips over the thinning zone — not the whole head
  • Let it dry for a few hours before bed or styling, and wash your hands afterward

Foam vs liquid

The foam dries faster and contains no propylene glycol, so it's gentler on sensitive scalps and less likely to cause itching or flaking. The liquid with a dropper is more precise and usually cheaper, but the propylene glycol it contains is the most common cause of irritation. If the liquid bothers your scalp, switch to foam.

The mistakes that waste it

  • Applying to wet hair, which dilutes it and lets it run off
  • Washing it off too soon — give it at least 4 hours
  • Using more than directed (no extra benefit, and a higher chance of unwanted facial hair)
  • Skipping days — consistency matters more than anything else
  • Quitting during the 2–8 week shedding phase

What to expect

There's an initial shedding phase in the first 2–8 weeks, early regrowth around months 3–4, and clearer density by 4–6 months, peaking near 12 months. The catch is the same as the benefit: it works only while you keep using it, so treat it as a long-term habit rather than a course you finish.

The questions we get asked the most — answered straight.

Dry. Towel-dry your hair and scalp after washing and let it finish drying before applying. A wet scalp dilutes the minoxidil and lets it run off the thinning areas you're targeting.
